Rhett Thurman

Artist, Rhett Thurman, has lived in and painted the Charleston area for over three decades.  She received her degree in Studio Art from Queens College and in 1995 was named "outstanding alumna" of the year.  Rhett's canvases are easily recognized by collectors for their extraordinarily bright palette of colors and loose impressionistic style.  The artist says, "Whether painting at home or abroad, a complicated sidewalk café or a simple slice of melon, my quest remains the same:  pushing past what I've done before for a fresh spin of light, color, and relationships of people, places, and things."

There is a visible and vibrant joyfulness of life that permeates all of Rhett's work.  The viewer is immediately drawn into her world, senses heightened by the bold, broad brushstrokes of color.  Rhett says of her work, "In lieu of attempting to say something aesthetically profound, I would simply say that for as long as I can remember, I have been on an art quest.  I am intrigued by dazzling light, what it does to color, and the contours on which it falls, particularly when involving the human form.  So my quest has become to interpret that in a way that is personal, uncontrived, and hospitable."

In addition to being a faculty member for the Studio Art Program for the Gibbes Museum, she is a member of the American and National Watercolor Societies.
