Wildlife sculptor, Tim Cherry,
developed an early understanding and love of animals in his native
Canada living in Alberta and British Columbia.
By the age of 15, he was working with an outfitter on hunting and
fishing trips into the wilderness of British Columbia, the Northwest
Territories and the Yukon covering a domain of over 10,000 square miles.
This career was further enhanced by working with renowned
taxidermist Forest Hart. It
was while working with Hart that Cherry discovered his true passion and
began his career as a sculptor of the wildlife he knew so intimately.
Tim now lives and works primarily in Branson, Missouri but spends a
great deal of time at the foundries in Loveland, Colorado.
Cherry's knowledge of animals is
evident in every piece he sculpts—the individual
"personality" of each animal is painstakingly rendered. The
smooth, semi-abstract shapes and textures of his pieces evoke a calming,
peaceful, "must touch" quality as well as bring a smile to the
viewer when the figure represents a whimsical characteristic in the
animal. Artists who have
guided and influenced Tim's career are Dan Ostermiller and Fritz White.
The almost "art nouveau" style of his work evolved over
time as he began to focus on "shape and form taking precedence over
exacting detail". As to
the humorous aspect of his work, Cherry says, "There are enough
unpleasant aspects in life, so, when it comes to my art, I prefer to
view my subjects from a lighter perspective."
A quote spoken by Picasso "The purpose of art is washing the
dust of daily life off our souls.", hangs on his studio wall and
aptly describes the essence of his work.
Cherry exhibits at the Prix de West
Show in Oklahoma City and is a recent recipient of its coveted James
Earle Fraser Sculpture Award. His
work is also shown at Sculpture in the Park in Loveland, the Western
Visions Show in Jackson Hole and at the National Sculpture Society Show.
Articles about his work have appeared in Wildlife
Art, Southwest Art, Art Talk
and Art of the West.
